Magna Grecia

Our mission

The rebirth of a people and their language

Magna Grecia exists to revive the Grecanico language and to raise a new generation who will return to their roots.

Long before borders were drawn, the shores of Southern Italy and Greece were one world. Greek ships carried language, faith, music and bread to the coasts of Calabria, and from them rose the great cities of Magna Grecia. That world never fully disappeared. It survived in the mountain villages, in the songs of grandmothers, in the words still spoken at kitchen tables — in Grecanico.

Today that voice grows quieter each year. Our mission is to make it strong again. We are building a route — a modern trade route and a bridge of people — that connects the historic cities of Magna Grecia, beginning in the south of Italy and stretching all the way to Greece.

By bringing together the villages, the artisans, the workshops, the creators, the sages and the people of the land, we hope to strengthen the heritage and cultural values they have guarded for centuries, and to pass them, living and whole, to the new generation of an ancient people.

What we are building

The Language

Grecanico has been spoken in the hills of Calabria for nearly three thousand years. We teach it, record it and carry it to a new generation, so it is spoken again — not only remembered.

The Route

We are rebuilding the ancient trade route of Magna Grecia: a living path that begins in the south of Italy and reaches across the sea to Greece, joining the cities our ancestors founded.

The People

Villages, artisans, workshops, creators, elders and sages — the people of the land are the heart of this network. Connecting them strengthens the heritage each one quietly keeps.

The Next Generation

Everything we build is for those who will come after us: the children and grandchildren who will one day return to their roots and find them still alive.

Alexandra

Founder

Alexandra, founder of Magna Grecia

Alexandra is a doctor in Canada, where she ran a clinic caring for refugees — people who had lost their homes, their lands and often their language. In their faces she recognised the story of her own people.

So she made a choice few would make. She set aside the life she had built to return to the people who, more than ever, needed her. From that decision this mission was born: to build a network that connects the language to the people — first through education, and through music.

Her song Aionia — "eternal" — is the voice of this mission: a song about the return to the roots, and about a heritage that does not die as long as someone is willing to carry it home.

Join the rebirth

This is a living nation and a living language. Everyone is invited.

Whether you speak Grecanico, remember a single word of it, or have simply felt the pull of these lands, there is a place for you. Teach, translate, record, cook, travel, create or simply learn — and help a people and their language be born again.
